From the Back Cover
No longer under British rule, Hong Kong is rapidly assuming its true identity as the most distinctively Chinese city in Asia. "Flower boards," Taoist temples, old-style pharmacies, and the constant rattle of mahjong tiles all serve as a reminder that beneath Hong Kong's Western exterior beats a Chinese heart. Award-winning author Kerry Moran focuses first on essential sights in the metropolis -- both famous and little-known -- as well as on dozens of easy getaways into the New Territories, a quiet refuge from the urban bustle. Hong Kong Handbook also helps travelers to organize their time in Hong Kong in the most effective way possible: *Explore fascinating aspects of Chinese culture-from dragons to tea, feng shui, and tai chi. *Bargain for deals, dine in the best restaurants, and navigate the public transit system of the world's busiest city. *Learn Cantonese phrases and Chinese characters. Hong Kong Handbook's character and phrase listings help travelers in reading maps and place signs. *Shopping is nearly everyone's favorite occupation in Hong Kong. Moran tells readers what to buy, where to buy it, and how much it should cost. *Visit the charming Portuguese enclave of Macau, steeped in colonial charm and preparing for its 1999 handover to China; and the dynamic south-China metropolis of Guangzhou, powerhouse for the economic transformation sweeping China. This thorough update of the essential travel guidebook to Hong Kong provides travelers the details they'll need to best experience this dynamic city in its present period of political and cultural changes.

This is 1 of the 2 tour guides I recommend for Hong Kong besides Fodor's. As a local who grew up and used to live in Hong Kong, I was both surprised and excited about how much foreigners can dig deep through this city. Post-colonial Hong Kong still preserves the heart-beat of Chinese heritage underneath the burgeoning veneer of high-tech development and finances. The official airline of Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific unveiled its newest operation logo couple of years back with slogan "Heart of Asia". The Hong Kong Tourist Association (HKTA) strived to revive tourism that was correlated with the regionwide stock market plunge in 1997 by launching the campaign "Hong Kong: City of Life" in 1998 to attract visitors. Featured was a 7-day-6-night package from the US including airfare and hotel for $899 including tax.Dubbed "Heart of Asia" and "City of Life", this volume of "Hong Kong Handbook" will surely be your pocket guide to explore this exotic capital of Asia. The book included history and remarkable events associated with this newest Chinese SAR (Special Administrative Region), along with its rich mixed cultures and lifestyles. In addition to the usual tips on fine dining, hotels from 5-star to no-star, shopping bargains and transportation, this handbook devotes incredible amount of pages on almost all the districts within the city. It would be a tremendous loss for any Hong Kong visitor to stay in central (downtown) area and the usual tourist spot like The Peak, Ocean Park and Po Lin Monastery. This handbook guides you to local areas like Mongkok, Yaumatei, and even outlying islands Po Toi Island, Tung Ping Chau, and Cheung Chau. One of the preserved wildlife area, Sai Gung Peninsula, is illustrated with lucid photos. You might wish to allocate 3-4 days hiking through the trails that provides panoramic view of the South China Sea.The Hong Kong Handbook offers more than just a packaged tour can satisfy. You might completely stay away from urban areas and venture through monasteries or explore one of the biggest man-made water reservoir Plover Cove. The border with mainland is just 15 miles from the main financial center. The guide would be a must-have for those who wish to see the other side of Hong Kong.

This is a terrific book. For years evangelicals have discussed among themselves ways to reach minority communities, without much participation from minorities themselves. This book is a game changer. Here, black, Asian, and Latino writers say what they most want to say to the evangelical (and specifically Reformed) community. If you are tired of the usual arguments about race, as I am, this book will wake you up with some new ideas, such as Lance Lewis s suggestion. He urges a moratorium on evangelicals' (even black evangelicals') planting churches directed toward blacks. I m not sure I agree. But like many ideas in this book, Lewis s are clearly written and backed up by good arguments. That a Reformed publisher has undertaken to publish a book like this is itself a very promising development. I urge everyone to read this book who is seeking to carry out Jesus Great Commission. --Dr. John Frame, Professor of Systematic Theology and Philosophy, Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando

Part of what should be convicting is the consistent voice of love of the church by minority believers AND the stories of alienation or outright racism from White believers as individuals or as institutions. The fact that they are often paired together should mean that as White Christians, we need to listen to what it is that alienates minorities, especially those that are potential leaders.Anthony Bradley is a professor and consistent critic of racism within the Reformed church. He has earned his place at the table, but often White believers want to reduce him to ‘angry Black man’. When you read what he has put up with in order to serve the church (and I have not read any of his longer books that he has written only shorter social media posts and blog posts), it is a wonder that any minority believers stay within the White church.Aliens in the Promised Land, a book of essays introduced by Bradley, was published in 2013 in the midst of one of his bouts of active persecution. As with any set of essays, there are some essays that grab you more than others. But other than the essay by Carl Ellis, which was fine, but about urban minority youth discipleship and felt a bit out of place, I thought they all added to the book well. There really are a number of different issues and Aliens in the Promised Land did well to address them. First, this is not just a Black and White issue. Amos Yong’s essay as an Asian in a ‘post-racist’ evangelicalism and several essays from a Hispanic and Latino authors illustrated to me that minorities are much more aware of the needs of different streams of minorities than many Whites who tend to reduce racial issues to Black and White.Another issue highlighted by Aliens in the Promised Land is the different needs and expectations of different minority communities. Juan Martinez on the different needs of students as one of the problems of theological education and Vincent Bacote’s focus on how many minorities and Whites view orthodoxy differently (Whites tend to focus on language of orthodoxy, while minorities tend to look at actions of orthodoxy as a prerequisite for words of orthodoxy) are good examples.Normative assumptions of White theologians as standard, while minority theologians are ‘Black Theology’ or ‘Asian Theology’ or ‘Latinx Theology’ is a good example of the blindness of institutions to their own assumptions.Personally, my seminary Systematic Theology class was taught by Dwight Hopkins, a well known African-American Liberation theologian. At the time, I did not understand how important reading Womanist theology and Feminist theology as examples of systematic theology was. I had previously had a good understanding of the basic concept of (White) systematic theology as an undergrad. For years, I thought that the class was a good second step for my theological education. But I assumed that my fellow classmates that had less theology background were probably missing basic systematic theology. That may have been true. Because of the modern bent of the class. But it was not true because of the choices of minority theologians by themselves. What continues to be illustrated as I listen to minority Christians is that White churches and institutions want minority faces. But are rarely ready to actually hear minority critiques. And when those critiques come from younger, and less experienced faculty or pastors, they are often dismissed as either ‘liberal’ or ‘confrontational’ or just ‘immature’. Vocal critics rarely get to places of actual authority and decision making because White churches, denominations and other institutions make it too hard to persevere. That leaves many wounded minority leaders along with crippled organizations that are unable to hear and accept the legitimate critiques of how White culture impacts White Christian institutions.
This book is a must read for anyone wanting to understand blockages to diversity in Christian higher education and in the Church. The topic is dealt with honestly, lovingly, but boldly. It doesn’t just speak of the problem. It offers solutions and approaches to changing things. I highly recommend it and am grateful to a friend of mine that introduced this author to me.
In Aliens in the Promised Land: Why Minority Leadership is Overlooked in White Christian Churches and Institutions we find a compilation of insightful essays from authors in the United States who represent this nation’s minority populations (specifically Asian, Black, and Latino) and who identify with Evangelicalism to some degree. The book is edited by Anthony Bradley (Associate Professor of Theology and Ethics, King’s College) who begins the book (General Introduction: My Story) with his own story as a Black man amongst Evangelicals. Bradley’s essay invites readers to adopt a listening posture, especially white Evangelicals who may not be consciously aware of how their Churches, denominations, and other institutions (especially academic ones) tend to ignore the minorities in their midst in favor of what is familiar to them. For those who are consciously aware this book serves to challenge the status quo. For those who are minorities themselves this book will resonate as the reader recognizes that they are not alone in their struggle for equality. As Bradley’s essay makes obvious, anyone who thinks the United States or Evangelicalism has entered a “post-racial†state have been fooled. Instead, language surrounding color blindness tends to serve as an excuse for ignoring real injustices and inequalities, even among Christians (especially among Christian?!) who identify as Evangelical. The contributors mix personal narrative with insightful research. Some address parish and/or denomination life. Others address the evangelical academy. Lance Lewis’ essay (Black Pastoral Leadership and Church Planting) is an eye-opening, though somewhat depressing look at how some Evangelical denominations favor giving the bulk of their resources to white Churches that appear more likely to “succeed†than to Black Churches where the struggle may be greater, especially in an impoverished, inner city context where the financial return on investment cannot compare to a thriving white Church in the suburbs. At the end of this chapter Lewis advises Black pastors to avoid accepting Church planting roles, opting to adopt a pastoral role in an established Church, noting how difficult it can be on one’s self and one’s family to plant a Church without the necessary support of their denomination.Amos Yong writes the only chapter (Race and Racialization in a Post-Racist Evangelicalism: A View from Asian America) addressing matters from the perspective of an Asian. This essay includes Yong’s own story as an Asian in the Assemblies of God (making this the only chapter written by a Pentecostal-Evangelical as well). He observes how racist structures remain intact even as post-racial jargon becomes popular. Then he provides a vision for how Evangelicalism might move forward to a place where racial equality does exist among us.Juan Martinez contributes one of the most insightful essays (Serving Alongside Latinos in a Multiethnic, Transnational, Rapidly Changing World) I’ve ever read on Evangelical Latino Americans. As a former employee of a seminary who worked in the admissions department this chapter resonated with me because I worked in a very white seminary that wondered aloud how it might attract more minority students but who in practicality did very little to change internally so that this dream could become reality. Martinez shows how difficult it is for white institutions to consider making changes that would make them more inclusive. Also, he observes that among Latinos many of the Bible Institutes lack the necessary accreditation for their students to move on to seminary studies at the graduate level causing Latinos to have a disadvantage in this regard. As with the other writers this essay is insightful and provides the reader with ways to move toward change.Vincent Bacote (Ethnic Scarcity in Evangelical Theology: Where Are the Authors?) provides a sketch of the realities that prevent many Blacks and Latinos from being published by some of the more prominent, influential Evangelical publishers. This essay piggy backs on Martinez’s essay observing how a lack of educational opportunities for minorities results in a lack of publishing opportunities, especially by those publishers who want their authors to have received graduate level education to publish certain types of books. For those affiliated with the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) many of Bacote’s comments will prove challenging. Though he doesn’t address the Society of Biblical Literature I imagine his observations may be applicable there as well.Harold Dean Trulear’s essay (Blacks and Latinos in Theological Education as Professors and Administors) also develops smoothly in light of Martinez’s earlier essay. Trulear’s notes on how Evangelical institutions confuse their restrictive policies against minorities as a stance for “doctrine.†This was another observation I found all too familiar. He does praise groups like Intervarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) for doing more to integrate minorities into Evangelicalism while noting that most institutions do not follow IVCF’s commitment to diversity. In order to become more inclusive institutions must recognize and address disparities related to geography and demographics, economics and prestige, political history and race, and the role of their perceived orthodoxy in forming the ethos of their institutions.Orlando Rivera’s essay (Blacks and Latinos in Theological Education as Students) examines the same topic from another angel, that of perspective and active students. As with the essays by Martinez, Bacote, and Trulear this is another must read essay for those working as Presidents, Academic Deans, or in the admissions departments of traditionally white Evangelical institutions. Rivera’s essay is packed with insightful data and he used Nyack College as a model of an institutions that appears to be overcoming some of the very flaws that hinder most Evangelical institutions from recruiting minorities. The final two essays by Ralph C. Watkins (A Black Church Perspective on Minorities in Evangelicalism) and Carl F. Ellis Jr. (Theology and Cultural Awareness Applied: Discipling Urga Men) are “big picture†essays, one dealing with Evangelicalism in general and one dealing with Black and Latino makes who live in an urban context. Watkins essay challenges readers to rethink the curriculum used by Evangelicals. He makes a strong case that our curriculum reflects a racist structure and a racialized metanarrative. This chapter challenged me to rethink how seminaries may teach both Systematic Theology and Church History courses. Ellis’ essay was a reminder that issues surrounding gender are often further complicated by matters of race/ethnicity, socio-economic class, and even geography. The reader of this review will notice two things: (1) this book’s message is mostly applicable for conservative Evangelicals and (2) there is a deafening silence surrounding women, women’s issues, and the role of women as relates to this subject. I don’t know why this is so, since it would seem to be related topic. That said, Bradley has gathered together a good group of authors who have a lot to say. For white Christians like myself who have spent a lot of time around white Evangelical Churches and other institutions the best thing you can do as a reader is engage this book with the posture of a learner. I learned a lot from this book because the authors showed me things I would have never known on the basis of my own experience as a privileged white male. Too often people like myself want to be the one’s who speak and who “fix things,†but this often reinforces the problem. These authors have a lot to teach us if we’ll get ourselves out of the way.
Excellent treatise on critical issues facing minorities in the academy. I personally have experienced the issues covered and found the information not only accurate but very insightful. This is a must read--especially if seminaries are actually going to address the future needs of the church. If not--they risk being more irrelevant than they already are.Rod Cooper
As a minority I can say I saw my life story play out over and over in this book. Each chapter either explained my own life to me so I can better understand things or it revealed a blind spot that I didn't know was there. Each writer took their section and really tackled the subject with eloquence and incredible insight. If someone is really wanting to learn, then this book is a willing teacher.
Fantastic read from such a diverse group or academics and practitioners. This book has helped better frame my view and voice regarding the topic of race and the church.
As a pastor of Indian (Asian) descent, I never quite understood my disconnect with evangelical churches and their leaders. This book has filled in the missing pieces in those experiences.
I completely appreciated the cross-cultural honesty and transparency of the various writers. Such forthrightness enlightens in ways that expand both appreciation and understanding of other perspectives. Thank you. Recommended.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7–10—This book has elements of Lauren Weisberger's The Devil Wears Prada (Doubleday, 2003) and Linda Francis Lee's The Devil in the Junior League (St. Martin's, 2006), but is geared to teens. There is mention of every popular, up-to-date brand name, movie, and store. There is advice on how to identify each clique in high school by fashion alone. The author gives dating advice, fashion advice, and advice on how to handle oneself in public. All of this "advice" is there to support the social climbers' quest to the A-List. Many of Schneider's comments are definitely New York specific, but she does succeed in creating an environment that is recognizable on almost any high school campus. Done in interesting and eye-catching fonts, the book will attract readers, but unless they're really interested in becoming A-Listers, it all becomes a bit much. Schneider does talk about the importance of fashion reflecting who you are—she encourages readers to figure that out independently and not be followers. Though parts of the book are entertaining, it's unlikely that it will be read cover to cover.—Emily Garrett, Armstrong Elementary School, Sachse, TX Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. So I tried to like this book, I really did, but I was disappointed. The author's tone was snotty and "I'm better-than-you" and seems like it will only appeal to what we now call "mean girls" rather than down-to-earth girls. If this is supposed to be funny and tongue-in-check, it's missing the mark. I would recommend that girls stick with American Girls books for guidance or the Teen Vogue Handbook. This book adds little to nothing to the marketplace.
Robyn Schneider's THE SOCIAL CLIMBER'S GUIDE TO HIGH SCHOOL is a fabulous guide to the average high school experience.Truth be told, I expected a vain, stuck-up instruction manual teaching the next generation of high school students to be vain, snobbish girls a' la Mean Girls. I stand corrected. It does have its moments of being slightly snooty, but having recently finished high school myself, I found that it was right on the money.Ms. Schneider gives you hints and tips for a successful high school experience. She covers everything from how to buy fourteen pairs of shoes in a single day (while only spending $240!) to dealing with gossip, classifying cliques, and being smart without being a know-it-all.I learned the rules to dating (including the rules for who picks up the bill!) and learned how to fake a boyfriend. Other lessons learned include how to spot a fake Louis Vuitton, how NOT to fake-and-bake, what to buy at a thrift store vs. a boutique, and how to D.I.Y. my room to make it socially acceptable.I thoroughly enjoyed this guide. It's quite accurate and will be a great companion for any girl entering high school.Reviewed by: Jessica Cave
This book is very sterotypical. Some parts were very right, such as there are no such thing as high school boys who play on the lawn of your high school, but others were so wrong.Getting a nose job was one of the many things you could do to get from B List to A List ! Um, how about, not ! The author frequently put how "special" she is (wow, she can cuss in Korean ! No one really cares !)And making a fake boyfriend ? Thats just asking for trouble. And then she says you shouldnt do mean things, but then she lists a bunch of ways to get back at someone, and how to get a "straphanger" off your back.Trying to get a college boyfriend in HIGH SCHOOL ? Do ANYONE know how many college boys take advantages of younger, HIGH SCHOOl girls ? A LOT.Overalll, I was not satisfied. It had many grammer errors and typos, most of them in bold.
This was a really down-to-earth guide. No sugarcoating, but real testimonies of high school. I recommend this book for any incoming freshman.
Although it's obviously meant humorously, the book is still very funny and more often then not, true.
Right, lets keep teaching teens the importance of being "social climbers" and dressing according to the "clique" that speaks to their inner angst.

The Emerald Mile is nominally about the fastest run ever successfully completed down the Colorado River / Grand Canyon - 36 hours and some change, but in reality, it's so much more. I was expecting a short, light read - a little good fun. Instead what I got was a truly epic tale, not just about the run, but about the entire history of the river, from 1540 to the present. The book feels like an interesting cross between the writings of Marc Reisner (Cadillac Desert), and John Krakauer (In to Thin Air). It's a bit of a brick, and there were a few parts where the author waxed poetic for awhile, but it was all in all exceptionally well written.Like Krakauer, Fedarko describes the action and surroundings in a way that makes you feel like you are in the boat, feeling the water, and seeing the amazing natural terrain. And like Reisner, Fedarko infuses the story with fabulous back stories of all the major players, so that you really feel the full force of the personalities which drive the two stories, which in the end were one.The protagonist in this book is the late and heavy snowpack of 1983, and the great melt that followed. Not only did it set the stage for the record run, but it caught the Bureau of Reclamation totally flat footed, threatening the Glen Canyon dam. They had spent 20 years filling Lake Powell, only to see a volume of water that could have filled half the lake in just one year. The damage it caused to the Glen Canyon Dam was unexpected and unprecedented. But the benefit to the river runners was also equally unprecedented. And for that you will need to read this book. One of the most interesting and amusing parts of the book is at the end- an interview with the author. Guaranteed to surprise you. And the pics at the end are fabulous, as are the fun tidbits in the bibliography. It's one reason the book is not quite as long as it initially appeared to be.
This is so much more than the story of the Emerald Mile's speed run atop Grand Canyon floodwaters. It's about the crew at Glen Canyon Dam trying to mitigate damage and keep the waters under control. It's about the people who were affected by the high flows, both boatmen and passengers. It's about three men who did the impossible, just to prove it could be done.I found this utterly fascinating, and enjoyed comparing it with similar Grand Canyon history books. It's interesting how everyone has a slightly different view of things, and the characters in the Big Ditch. For example, Georgie White is either a heroine or an outlaw, depending on who is telling the story at the time, and sometimes both. However, she'll always be remembered for her comment after wrecking at Crystal Rapid with her unsinkable boat during the flood. The behemoth came apart and scattered equipment and passengers seven ways to Sunday. Georgie was found, shaken but alive, and when Scott Thybony asked her what happened, her reply was "I told 'em to hang on. But they just don't make passengers the way they used to."They don't make Grand Canyon adventures the way they used to, either. With the National Parks Service banning everything they can, there won't be many more of these incredible tales to share around the campfires.I especially liked the story about the evolution of the McKenzie river driftboat into the Grand Canyon dory that runs the whitewater with elegance and grace, and the fragility of a soap bubble.Great for the armchair adventurer, or for the folks who are working the river.
I'm in charge of river ops for a dam system in the Bureau of Reclamation. When a friend's father handed me this book, I expected to hate it but I also wanted to understand some of what went into the operations I could review from 1983. This turned out to be a beautiful, balanced, thoughtful book. There's no right or wrong answer. There aren't any faceless demons. Fedarko treats both sides of the engineering/environment divide with compassion and draws such strong character portraits that you find yourself rooting for both.
I have read "a few" books on the Grand Canyon over the decades, and this one is at the very top of the list. It's hard to tell you how much I enjoyed every word. Don't know if I am biased because I love rowing wooden boats through The Canyon, but I would hope my appreciation for amazing writing talent trumps that. The enjoyment I have experienced from this extremely well crafted work of art is off the charts! Wow!We as a family often read books aloud to each other. When we were doing this with "Emerald Mile", we found that we had to pause often and just absorb and relish in the incredible magic of the words that had just transpired. Descriptions of "floating mandolins" in tune with "the harmonics of the river" and on and on....just pure delight to visualize! I love the description of the feeling of the connection of a wooden boat with water....things that an author could only know from years of being with and dreaming about the boats. You don't have to be a river person to enjoy this work, as the words flow just as beautifully as a river itself. Kevin Fedarko's dedication to and love for the subject is clear and truly amazing!Mike MartinGrand Canyon private dory boatmanadmirer of outstanding writing

I asked to review this book as I thought it would help me start off the new year with a new view of my diet. After so many years of trying to figure out what bother’s my stomach, trying this diet and that, this weird food and such; I’ve come to the conclusion I haven’t a clue what to eat to be healthy. Keto says this, but I don’t feel good like everyone else does eating that way, Paleo says eat this way, but nothing tastes good that I’ve tried, Atkin says eat lots of meat and fat, I get stomach pains. So, what do I eat?I was blown away by the information in this book that has you evaluate your relationship with food and your body. This author asks readers questions so that they can become aware of themselves and the food they eat. For example, she explains what mindful eating is, “…mindful eating is using all of our senses to be present in the entire eating experience, including choosing and preparing the food, while acknowledging our inner wisdom and body cues without judgment.â€I know eating has become a chore not a pleasure. I’ve been eating things I don’t like in order to be healthy and lose weight. The author addresses these issues and so much more through a list of questions at the end of each chapter to get you thinking about how you view food, and become aware of what you tell yourself about it and your body.I was blown away by the insight and what I learned about myself. I got more than I bargained for in a good way. Once you become aware of what your attitude about food is (through each chapter and questions,) the author than gives you a step-by-step guide to change a habit or three. (Grin)“One diet doesn’t fit all†Just because one diet doesn’t work the way it should doesn’t mean I’m a bad person, or I don’t have self-control and I’m not crazy if I don’t like what I’m eating because I think it tastes like tree bark and no one else does. LOL! It just means I’m different and I need to find what works for me. No judgement on me and/or my body. This is a book you’ll not want to rush through. This is a book everyone should read. It’s a keeper!Disclosure of Material Connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. In this workbook Vincci Tsui provides information, exercises, and space for reflection aimed at helping the reader develop a mindful relationship with food. Tsui writes from an attitude of caring and nonjudgment. This is not another dieting book. There are no food regimens, calorie counters, or portion controls. Tsui’s goal is to help individuals regain a positive relationship with food. The exercises are simple. Some of the concepts, though, may seem radical for Americans indoctrinated within a dieting culture. Tsui challenges common views concerning body image, weight, nutrition, and health. Reading her book will provide readers with a different perspective about the place of food in our lives. This workbook will interest a wider audience than just those interested in mindfulness. This book is a tool for anyone who wants to find pleasure and joy in the act of eating. This review is based on a reading of a free review copy received from the publisher.
Becoming aware, keeping track, registering your body, emotions, and thoughts, are habits of mindfulness. The Mindful Eating Workbook shows you how to be mindful about food, and uses simple explanations, questions, and exercises to teach you. The book also provides pages where you can record your experience so you can increase your awareness and develop healthy habits. These habits nurture us in all aspects of life, including eating.I've read a review copy sent to me by the publisher.
While eating is an essential part of life, it can be troublesome for some. With the large portions available it is easier than ever to eat more than you should. Some people use food to compensate for problems or something to do when bored. This book contains several exercises and practices to become more mindful of your relationship with food.I received a free copy from the publisher to review.

This is the 49th book I have read this year and it is quite possibly the best so far. I read (or listen to) lots of books and I usually figure out where it is headed relatively quickly. Unfortunately, figuring the ending out early can be a little anti-climactic. I thought for sure I had the ending pegged several times, but every idea I had was wrong. Vernon kept me guessing until the very last sentence!!The book started a little slow, but once it had my attention, I couldn't read fast enough. Congrats on your debut novel!! Very well done and hope to read more in the future.
This debut novel by Vernon had me double and triple checking everything I read, it was such an intricately woven masterpiece of suspenseful writing. The characters are well-written and multidimensional so that you really feel for them. When Gray reached for that Riesling in the restaurant, I became so angry and exasperated that I actually shouted "Dammit Gray!" The missing husband, the alcoholic wife, the overbearing mother, the supportive sister, sketchy cousin (who, I imagine, has one of those handsome, punchable faces), a mysterious woman named Annie, and a detective friend are all players in this labyrinthine whodunnit. This is the only book I read in the past year that I had to finish quickly, I had to scratch that itch of finding out what happened!
Absolutely loved this debut novel by Vernon! As much as I read, I often find myself predicting what will happen next as I read. This novel had twists that I never saw coming. Not only is it well written, but the storyline accelerates quickly and keeps up the pace until the end. It will be difficult to find a good “stopping point†so be prepared to read all night. I’m looking forward to future books by this author. Already a fan!
This book was amazing! It was full of suspense and twists! Love!
I chose this book because the review made it sound exciting. It was fun, even if a bit obvious. A good read for those who like a bit of horror.
Talk about dysfunctional families! I loved the debut novel of P.J. Vernon. It reminded me a lot of Gone Girl and Girl on the Train. Excellent character development and descriptive imagery! I felt like I was in sultry, swampy South Carolina. I thought I could guess who the killer was about 1/2 dozen times but I was so wrong. Great quick read that kept me up until the wee hours. I Highly recommend When You Find Me!
If you liked Gone Girl, Girl on the Train, Woman in the Window, etc - you absolutely must read this book.It is a page turner!!! It will literally give you chills. From the first page to the last line, you will be hooked. It is written with a comfortable ease that makes picturing the scenes in your mind effortless. This is really a stellar book and one of my favorites in this genre.
Holy Moly this book was so fun to read! The turmoil the characters go through really makes you feel for them and then all the twist and turns keep you sticking around to find out what happens. No spoilers here, but wow, that ending blew me away! I’m already recommended this book to everyone I know.
