If you’re in the position to start thinking about college, this book is for you! Today, colleges are in serious need of updating. They teach theoretical things that no longer apply in the real world. I graduated university and did as I was told and expected, but I haven’t used my degree ever since I got it. It doesn’t prepare you for what’s “out there,†life experience will.Growing up we are told to listen to the grown ups because they know things, and they do. But just because they know things, doesn’t mean, as children, and as young adults we don’t know anything! Ultimately, you are the one who’ll be doing the studying and the getting a job and the working part - you are meant to have the biggest say in the matter! This book gives a realistic view of colleges, and unfortunately, they are no longer fulfilling their purpose. I wish I had this book while I was still in high school! The author gives you real options for what to do instead of college that will maximize your true potential. If you decide to go to college later, the door is always open. But your 20s are not! Make the best of them! Read this book and open your mind to the reality that the world is much bigger than college.I highly recommend it, based on my personal experience! Very well written, this book offers you a reality-check when it comes to choosing college right away and it opens the door for other possibilities that I believe are more valuable at this point you are finding yourself!
R.J. Vickers's book, College Can Wait, brilliantly handles the lightning rod topic "putting college on hold" in an enlightened, informative and forthright manner. Throughout the book it becomes abundantly clear how important it is for her to help high school students realize all that's possible so they can make the wisest choice for them. And she doesn't hold back as she shares her own story, along with providing amazing tips about finding/getting cool jobs, traveling on a budget, and finding internships to name a few- all things I wish I knew at 17.All high school guidance counselors/ teachers/ principals should have College Can Wait sitting on their desks! Not on a book shelf or in a bag or still not purchased, but prominently placed where high school students can see it, ask about it, read it, and then start an honest dialogue about their next steps. As an educator, I truly believe in kids, their potential and their future success, BUT I also believe they must know ALL their options, as well as the truth about taking out loans/being in debt, before deciding if college is right for them right now. That's why I highly recommend College Can Wait! by R.J. Vickers. It is the perfect book for reluctant students who need to know someone is listening and willing to provide plausible alternatives for an amazing start after high school, not just the old bit, "You must go to college."
If you are unsure about college, or just a major, then this is the book for you. In this book you will find information pertaining to your college decision. Here you will find suggestions for what to do with yourself. Should you even go? What if I want a break from school? What do you do with parental or family pressure? Do you have a dream to travel? It's all here. Get this book and find out what options you have that you may not have ever thought of. I personally took time off before college. I wish I had this book then. I never considered working my way around the world or using internships to help with the decision. Personally, I am for, and always have been for, taking a break between high school and college and gaining some life experience. You are very likely to discover that what you thought you wanted to do, isn't it. You will probably discover that what your parents want you to do holds no interest for you. I'm a parent so I can say this; it isn't their decision. It isn't their choice. Your interests are probably nowhere near theirs. I promise you don't want to spend years and stacks of cash on a career or job you despise. Just get this book right now and make your own decision, your own future, and your life.
I love R.J. Vickers’ “tell it like it is†style. It’s perfect for high school students who are trying to figure out their next step in life.Having a son who just finished college a year ago, I know that many of his peers are in a position where they don’t know what they want to do after they graduate. All they truly know is that they have a huge student loan debt that low paying jobs won’t be able to pay off. Before investing in college, it’s important for our children to figure out who they are and what they enjoy doing. This book is a must read if you or your child wants to know what options are available and how they can find their true calling in life!
As a high school teacher for nearly 20 years I can say that there is no one-size-fits-all for going to college or not. While it is proven that college graduates earn more over their life times than high school grads, so many spend a very expensive growing up time while under the constantly ticking clock of college tuition bills. I have seen it time and again. A very expensive way to grow up. And when they do, they go back to a community college to develop skills that will actually land them a job.A gap period avoids the pitfalls of failed college classes and personal/family disappointments that follow and can allow for productive learning, people skills, and a realistic view of what really matters. R.J. Vickers' book is something that should be explored by those who feel an uncomfortable push to attend college right out of high school and who are not attracted to take the military route (another viable option for maturing). This merits the serious study families give to each college brochure that comes into the mailbox; no one choice is perfect for all and all options need to be explored.
