Short version: This is the best Clancy book, period. Buy it and read it.Long version: Tom Clancy got more grown men reading in the 1980's and 90's than Playboy did. A remarkable feat, to be sure, but he's not without his weaknesses as an author. His characters can be a bit weak, their motivations shoehorned into a larger narrative. And while Jack Ryan made a fun, believable character, some of his other continuity books (specifically without remorse>> rainbow six) haven't aged all that well.Red Storm Rising is that unique book that made the most out of all Clancy's strengths, while minimizing his weaknesses. The book's epic global scale lets his procedural knowledge and expertise shine, while giving him a backdrop for the tension and suspense that turn a 750 page book into a page-turner. What's more; by focusing on dutiful enlisted men and officers, he's able to sidestep the bad characterization that hurt his other works, and allow natural well-rounded characters to emerge from their own actions instead of some hamfisted exposition.Red Storm Rising provides a stunningly realistic and believable account of an imagined "World War 3" between NATO and Soviet Forces. It's action-packed and exciting without ever being over the top. You root for the characters, and you genuinely fear for their lives as the conflict unfolds. It never gets boring, it never becomes unbelievable, and it never ceases to amaze in its depth of realism.

It's Tom Clancy at his best. Exceptional detail as one would expect with Clancy. It is really long though, but detailed. It takes on many perspectives of the war and allows you to see it unfold from numerous different vantage points. I especially liked the perspective of the destroyer escorts as they tried to protect the supply convoys keeping NATO supplied in the face of the Russian onslaught. The detail in the ground combat is also stunning. Having spent many years in Iraq both working at the tactical level and the general officer level, I really liked how Clancy is able to jump from one vantage point to another. It's hard to find authors who can write at all levels of a conflict. Some people excel at writing from the strategic level while others are great for the soldiers point of view. Clancy, is one of the few who can write at all levels and keep you wanting more. I really liked this book and highly recommend it to anyone who wants a good long read.

This is an old favorite, I have read it cover to cover many times. The feel of the story is very much how I remember life in 1985 when the Cold War was in full force and the events of this book were a real possibility and fear. Those of us in our prime draft age at the time knew we could be living this scenario at any moment and revisiting this time period evokes a strange feeling of nostalgia. When this novel was written the world was a much simpler place, we knew who the enemy was and we could understand what their goals were.In terms of the military events portrayed the novel is accurate in most things. The only amusingly wrong thing was the expectation of what a small 'stealth' aircraft would look like and be capable of. At the time the F-117 was the deepest darkest secret technology of the American military and the speculative F-19 stealth fighter bomber imagined by the author is a not unreasonable attempt to describe a weapon system no civilian had ever seen and estimate its capabilities. All in all Mr. Clancy did a masterful job of creating a machine that while looking nothing like the F-117 is able to preform the same bombing missions that real world aircraft can accomplish.Mr. Clancy also paints the war in a realistic fashion, neither side has a runaway victory overwhelming the other with vastly superior technology, commitment, or tactics. Both sides start out over confident of what they can accomplish and both sides make mistakes which the other tries to take advantage of. In some cases they succeed and in others they fail, but the events have a very real world feel to them much like reading a novel set in either World War where the same pattern progressed.

This book was fantastic. After years of putting off Red Storm Rising I finally got around to it and regret not doing it years earlier. Precision in his military writing that is often lacking in many authors, yet does not try to bog you down in the details. This is perhaps the best Clancy novel and definitely has that rare quality of both quality and quantity. Despite the rather hefty tome that it is, I found myself wishing it hadn't ended after finishing it.

I found this book difficult to become excited about. The initial underlying account of a terrorist attack on a giant Russian oil refinery that resulted in long-term energy short falls seemed to present a weak, illogical basis for the rest of the plot. The politboro decides that it can't wait the 18-36 months that are necessary for the repair and restart of the refinery, so , hey, let's go to war. We'll invade the Arab countries and take their oil, but NATO won't like that, so we'll knock NATO off first. Very simple, and somehow much more convenient than purchasing oil temporarily from countries that might refuse us or actually charge us in currency that we don't have much of (well, we won't bother to ask; no, better to go to war; after all, we will win in record breaking time because we are so clever at deception). This beginning defies common sense and the historical record. No matter how corrupt, brutal and incompetent the politboro was at any given time during the Cold War, no matter how many times they may have actually been severely tempted to attack NATO, no such direct conflict occurred due to a reluctance to have themselves and their country engulfed in a nuclear nightmare from which there could be no recovery. So instead, proxy wars, a much safer alternative, were fought between the two nuclear- armed super powers. Clancy's initial premise, then seems so divorced from historical reality that I found it difficult to take the rest of the plot seriously, although it was wrapped up impressively with mounds of technical information. This book wasn't nearly as exciting as I had anticipated.
