In the prologue we find young Gunnar dangerously injured. His father had been killed in a tournament days before, and he'd just watched his mother murdered before his eyes for refusing to wed the marauding Baron who stormed their keep. Chased down and slashed from behind, Gunnar is saved from death by a local healer, and vows vengeance. As the story begins, an adult Gunnar still strives to avenge his parent's death, even if it means his own. But the Baron is no longer a fierce foe - he's an old man. Unable to find an opportunity to challenge the Baron hand-to-hand, Gunnar raids and vandalizes his various holdings, and finally kidnaps his daughter, hoping to force his foe to a duel for her life.Raina is the feisty and beautiful daughter of the Baron, who has doted on her since she her mother died. Dragged off by a man she finds both irresistible and terrifying, she doesn't know who to believe. Gunnar seems to be sincere in his portrayal of her father as a heartless murderer, but that doesn't jive with the indulgent and kind man she has known her whole life. How could her father possibly have done the things Gunnar claims? The pair inevitably give in to their storm of passion, knowing full well that they face a heartbreaking end. Raina will soon be exchanged for her father and return to her life as a Lady, while Gunnar satisfies his need for revenge. But now that Gunnar has his goal within his reach, he wonders if he can really give up the woman he's come to love. For an early work, Lord of Vengeance is nicely done. Yes, it's a bit formulaic but the passion is there, the setting is interesting, and the plot rolls along well with good pacing. There are a few anachronistic moments, and the bad-guy conflict stalls a bit as the characters deal with their romantic feelings and doubts. One chuckle I did get was early in the book where Gunnar muses that he's only had one sexual experience since he's afraid that getting involved with a woman will distract him from his purpose. Either that one experience was with the world's greatest courtesan, or Gunnar was born with the coveted porn-star gene, because he certainly knew all the moves. It always cracks me up in a romance when a sexually inexperienced character instinctively is the Greatest Lover Ever. Usually it's the woman, who is a virgin one moment, then suddenly can deep throat and work the kegels like a pro. In this book it was the guy, and it made me giggle. All my nitpicking aside, this was an enjoyable book, a light historical romance for a chilly November evening.
Even though this book is obviously one of Ms. Adrians earliest works...it's still a fun read if you're in the mood for something verrrrry sweet with little romance. It's just so gosh darn fun to read a story where this macho Alpha Male is all twisted up and driven to distraction over some petite female. The story begins with a five star bang that continually holds the reader captive. The thing is, it doesn't progress! The first half of this book is all about Lord Gunnar Rutledge's desire for Lady Raina d'Bussy...it's fun to read about his dilemma, but it grows tedious and becomes mundane. For that reason I give it a four star even though I prefer something a bit more racy. This story is "sweet", unoriginal and predictable. As a 10 year old boy, Gunnar Rutledge watches as his mother and father are slain and he himself is cut down and left for dead. But he survives and swears vengeance upon the man who murdered his parents, Baron Luther d'Bussy...yep, it's Lady Raina's dad. (dum dum duuuuum) Lord Gunnar matures into a mighty warlord and after waiting thirteen years, takes his vengeance out on Baron d'Bussy (now an old, crippled man), by destroying his lands and taking his daughter (Lady Raina) hostage to trade for d'Bussy himself.Lord Gunnar Rutledge is the usual warlord character...ie; hawt and yummy, arrogant and extremely proud. I loved him! He's stubborn and serious and because of his violent past, he's built a protective wall around himself. He's emotionless. He's unaccustomed to showing or feeling emotion...he's trained himself to feel nothing but hate and bitterness. He lives for vengeance. So when he unexpectedly begins to feel and care for Raina, the emotions make him fearful. He's fearful that those new feelings will weaken him towards his lifelong ultimate goal of vengeance.I had mixed feelings about Lady Raina d'Bussy. There's very little description about her. We only read that her hair is "dark" and toward the end of the book we find out her eye color is green/brown. Raina is virtuous and naive, but strong and courageous. I loved how "proper" she was. For Gunnar, she's a fascinating abundance of temptations. The villians basically disappear after the first few chapters and we don't read anymore about them until the very end; still, all in all..the story is fairly well told in a cutsey sweet fashion.
I guess I really do need to heed that advice about judging a book by its cover. I almost passed this one by due to the cheesy cover art. However, I'm glad I downloaded this book. It turned out to be one of those rare 5 star keepers in my opinion. The story is about Gunnar Rutlege and his need to exact revenge on Baron d'Bussy for murdering both Gunnar's father and mother. The gruesome prologue describing the death of Gunnar's mother and his own near death gives the reader an understanding of why Gunnar's entire life was a quest to seek revenge. He had spent the next 13 years honing himself into an unfeeling warrior. Emotions got in the way and gave room for error. Gunnar couldn't afford to be distracted from his single vision of honor in retribution.Gunnar's revenge plot get thwarted somewhat when he met and developed feelings for his enemy's daughter, the lovely Raina. When he first met her she was dressed as a peasant girl while out racing her lifelong friend Nigel. Both Raina and Nigel had grown into young adults, and Raina wasn't quite prepared for Nigel's developing feelings towards her. Luckily for Raina, Gunnar happened to be near to resuce her from an unwanted advance. Later in the story, when Gunnar discovers Raina is the daughter of his nemesis, he kidnaps her in hopes of getting to her father. The relationship between Gunnar and Raina was enjoyable to watch. The author built the story with enough tension and contact between the two that kept me hooked. Gunnar had wonderful growth as a character throughout the story. Raina did as well. The story had a few tension filled moments of suspense. I truly was not expecting the outcome of Nigel's part in this story. Well done. I will be a repeat reader of this author.
