Scruton has created a profound argument for a way of considering the way architecture effects peoples lives and society overall. Through his criteria, we can make find a way back to a more humane and enriching environment.

Book in good condition, as advertised.

The clearest, richest, most fruitful writing on architecture since Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture by Venturi. Scruton's argument is narrow but it is not wrong. He indulges in a prescriptive conclusion that will frustrate Modernists who don't read carefully — which has limited Scruton's audience — but his analysis applies to all modes of design and will enrich the work of any thoughtful architect working today.

Ordered the wrong book.

This is an extraordinarily fruitful book for serious working architect and thoughtful student alike. It is *beautifully* written: vivid turns of phrase on every page carry a reader through a complex topic. Although his concluding paragraphs flatter a reactionary taste, his line of thought will enrich the work of even the most determined Modernist. Scruton's argument is narrow, but he is not wrong.

Scruton takes his readers on a journey through aesthetic theory and tries in every sense to apply them directly to architecture. By using theories from Kant, Marx, Freud, Hume, Alberti, Ruskin and many others on topics such as constructivism, and literary theory, Scruton tries to find the essence of architecture. Has architecture an essence?The book seemed to have many topics that were mentioned but not neccessarily completed which led to (at times) difficult reading and lost thought. The book also was biased in the sense that it praised the past and was unsure of the present and future of architecture.For those that have an inherent interest in aesthetics, architecture (particulary classical architecture), and classical thinking this is a good book to read.
