From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K—These pages burst with vibrant photographs of baby animals and close-ups of buds and growth. Esbaum uses poetic prose to connect children with the joy of the season: "Spring tiptoes in,/stirring up earthy/smells, coaxing/color from the/winter-brown woods." Students will recognize themselves in the eager, tentative duckling taking to water. A climax of an oncoming storm sends animals scrambling for shelter. This slight but attractive book ends with a forecast for blue skies.—S. McClendon, Friends School of Atlanta, Decatur, GA (c) Copyright 2010. My kiddos (ages 3 and 6) enjoy looking at this book, but not reading it. The photographs are beautiful and fun, but there is no real story, and the words are boring. It did give us a lot of spring topics to talk about, like what baby birds eat and spring thunderstorms.
All of these National Geographic books are great and you cannot go wrong for the price. They have beautiful photography and make learning come alive for kids. Both my five year old and seven year old love these books and we bring them out as the seasons change to help illustrate what is going on in our own back yard. Your child will not even know he/she is learning!
Beautiful big 8x10 sized pictures, short sentences my pre k class loved it. I want the whole " series" now!
I purchased this book after buying an earlier edition by NG about seasons that was a hit with my 3-year-old students. This book lived up to my expectations and thrilled the children again with colorful and engaging photos. I especially like the sturdiness of the cover and pages for a "paperback" print copy.
This book is BEAUTIFUL - the pictures are just lovely. However, the poetry is modern and for some reason it just doesn't resonate with my 28 month old like other childrens' books seem to do.
What a beautiful, sweet book that shows signs of Spring we might find if only we look around to see.
I have this book to all my nieces and nephews and they love it. Animals are a big hit!
I will be using this in the classroom for my unit on Spring. I also use it to teach my young son. The illustrations are great.
